Cate did not come from outdoor people. She lived in a neighborhood and played outside, but she wasn’t exposed to outdoor activities like hiking and camping until working at a summer camp during college. When she told her parents she wanted a tent and sleeping bag as a college graduation gift, they scoffed and gave her money. She used it to buy a tent and sleeping bag.
After working for five years, she took a 3-month, solo cross country road trip and tried to visit as many National Parks as possible. Shortly thereafter, she moved out west, living in Arizona and Washington, where her love of hiking really took hold. When she ended up back in New York State, she didn’t know anyone to hike with in her new city of Binghamton. Thankfully, she discovered the Triple Cities Hiking Club (one of the finest!) and discovered the hiking in New York that she missed growing up.
Cate served on the board of the Finger Lakes Trail Conference for six years, and led a number of hikes for the organization. Additional board work includes serving as the Recording Secretary for her volunteer fire company and Vice President of the local chapter of her professional certification group. Professionally, Cate is a Clinical Research Coordinator in the Epilepsy division of Neurology at URMC. She has a Masters in Public Health, and has worked at URMC for nearly 18 years.
Cate is lucky to have found a partner who loves the outdoors with whom she hikes, kayaks, camps, and snowshoes. Their favorite type of vacation is a hiking trip, and lately they’ve begun inviting friends, so hiking the Tour de Mont Blanc and Great Glen Way have been enjoyed with others. She lives in Rochester with her husband David and their two cats, Georgie and Gigi. She is excited to be part of WE Adventure NY and looks forward to helping the organization grow.
